Oven Cleaning for End of Lease: What Agents Check

By Cleaning Near Me team ·

Short answer: oven cleaning at the end of a lease means removing grease and burnt-on food from the inside walls, racks, trays, door glass and seal, so the oven matches its condition on your ingoing report. In Victoria you must leave a rental reasonably clean, and agents almost always open the oven at the final inspection. Clean it before key handover, or book it as an extra.

Do I have to clean the oven when moving out in Victoria?

Yes, if it’s dirtier than when you moved in. Victorian renters must leave the property reasonably clean, allowing for fair wear and tear, and the oven is part of the property.

“Reasonably clean” doesn’t mean showroom new. Your agent or rental provider compares the oven with the ingoing condition report, so an oven that was already stained when you moved in doesn’t have to come out better than that. Check your report and photos before you start, because they set the standard.

Consumer Affairs Victoria’s moving out guide explains your obligations when you leave, and its page on condition reports explains why the ingoing report matters.

What do agents check in the oven at the final inspection?

They open the door, look inside and pull out the racks. The kitchen is where most cleaning deductions start, and the oven is one of the first places a property manager looks.

Area What the agent looks for
Inside walls and roof Grease splatter and brown baked-on film
Oven floor Burnt food, spills and ash
Racks and trays Black grease build-up in the wire and corners
Door glass Smears inside, and grime between the panes
Door seal Food and grease trapped in the rubber
Knobs and control panel Sticky fingerprints and grease around the dials
Grill and grill tray Fat residue under the element
Stovetop and rangehood Grease on burners and in the rangehood filters
Behind and beside the oven Crumbs and grease if the unit slides out

The stovetop and rangehood aren’t part of the oven, but agents check them at the same moment. Our end of lease cleaning checklist covers the rest of the kitchen room by room.

How do you clean an oven for the end of lease inspection?

Work from the removable parts to the inside, then finish with the glass and outside. Give yourself a few hours, because heavy grease needs time to soften.

  1. Turn the oven off and let it cool completely. Switch it off at the wall if you can.
  2. Remove the racks, trays and grill pan. Soak them in hot water with a degreaser, or lay them in a bath on old towels so you don’t scratch it.
  3. Check the manual or the model number. Pyrolytic (self-cleaning) ovens and catalytic liners need different care, and some cleaners can damage them.
  4. Apply your cleaner to the inside walls, floor and roof. Keep it off the heating elements, fan and door seal. Wear gloves and open a window.
  5. Wait, then wipe and scrape. Use a plastic scraper on stubborn spots, not steel wool on enamel.
  6. Clean the door glass. Some doors come apart so you can reach between the panes. Only do this if the manual shows how.
  7. Wipe the seal gently with warm soapy water.
  8. Scrub and rinse the racks and trays, dry them and put them back.
  9. Finish the outside: the door, handle, knobs and control panel.
  10. Take photos with the door open and the racks in place.

Rinse well. Chemical residue left inside can smoke and smell the next time the oven heats up.

Can I use the self-clean setting?

On a pyrolytic oven, yes, if you follow the manual. The cycle burns residue to ash, which you then wipe out. Remove the racks first unless the manual says they can stay in.

Run it at least a day before the inspection, because the cycle takes hours and the oven stays locked until it cools. It won’t clean the racks, the outside of the door or the seal, so those still need doing by hand.

How much does end of lease oven cleaning cost?

Oven cleaning is an extra on our end of lease clean, from $32 per oven (excluding GST). The price depends on the oven’s size and condition, and we confirm it before the clean is booked.

It’s a separate extra because ovens vary so much: years of baked-on grease take far longer than light use. Our guide to how long an end of lease clean takes explains what else adds time.

DIY or professional oven cleaning: which is better?

DIY works if the oven is lightly used and you have a few spare hours. A professional is worth it if the grease is heavy, the glass is stained between the panes, or you’re short on time before key handover.

DIY Professional extra
Cost Cleaning products only From $32 per oven, ex GST
Time Often several hours, plus soaking Done during your end of lease clean
Best for Light, regular use Heavy grease, burnt-on spills, glass grime
If the agent raises an issue You go back and fix it Free re-clean if raised within 3 days

If you book our end of lease cleaning Melbourne service, add the oven as an extra in the quote form. If the agent or rental provider raises a reasonable issue within 3 days, we come back and re-clean it for free.

When should the oven be cleaned before handover?

Clean it last in the kitchen, after you’ve finished cooking in the property. A final meal the night before can undo a perfect clean.

Do it a day or two before the final inspection where you can. That leaves time to finish soaking racks, run a self-clean cycle and air out any smell. Then take dated photos, so you have evidence if the bond is disputed. Our guide on how to get your full bond back in Victoria covers the bond side.

FAQs

Will an agent deduct my bond for a dirty oven?

They can claim cleaning costs from the bond if the oven isn’t reasonably clean compared with the ingoing condition report. You can dispute a claim you disagree with. Photos taken after cleaning are your best evidence.

Do I need to clean between the oven door glass?

If there’s visible grime between the panes and it wasn’t on your ingoing report, it’s best to clean it. Some doors come apart, but only take one apart if the manual shows how. Otherwise, a professional can check whether it’s safe to do.

Do I need to pull the oven out to clean behind it?

Only if it’s a freestanding oven that slides out easily. Built-in wall ovens aren’t usually moved. If you do slide one out, protect the floor and watch the gas or power connection.
